In 1842, when Charles Dickens and his wife visit America, they make an excursion down into the famed Mammoth Cave, led by the slave guide Stephen Bishop. Before the night is over, two members of the party have been murdered, a tuberculosis patient arrives in their midst, and several characters reveal themselves to be other than who they claim to be. Stephen, illiterate and enslaved, finally takes charge of the travelers at gunpoint and successfully brings them back into the light.
